CACMR Congratulates Mark Carney on being sworn in as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister

The Canada-Arab Congress on Middle East and North Africa Relations (CACMR) congratulates the Right Honourable Mark Carney on his appointment as Leader of the Liberal Party and as new Prime Minister of Canada, succeeding the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau. His selection marks an important moment for the Liberal Party and Canada as a whole.

Mark Carney, a distinguished economist and former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has recently been appointed as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister, succeeding Justin Trudeau. His leadership comes at a pivotal moment, with Canada facing significant challenges, including escalating trade tensions with the United States under President Donald Trump, who has imposed tariffs and made annexation threats.

In his inaugural address, Carney firmly asserted Canada’s sovereignty, stating, “Canada will never be part of the U.S.” He emphasized the nation’s readiness to confront external pressures and underscored the importance of diversifying trade partnerships to reduce economic dependence on the U.S.

Carney’s immediate agenda includes strengthening alliances with European nations. While Carney’s recent focus has been on navigating the complexities of U.S.-Canada relations and reinforcing ties with European allies, his prior engagements have demonstrated a commitment to global financial initiatives, including those in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Notably, in 2022, as the UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance and co-chair of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), Carney announced the launch of GFANZ Africa. This initiative aimed to create a regional network engaging African financial institutions to mobilize climate-smart finance, supporting the transition to a resilient, low-carbon economy.

Although specific details of Carney’s policies toward the MENA region as Prime Minister have yet to be outlined, his track record indicates a proactive approach to international collaboration on economic and environmental issues. As his administration progresses, more concrete strategies regarding Canada’s engagement with the MENA region are anticipated to emerge.

As a voice for Arab communities in Canada and a bridge for strengthening ties with the Middle East and North Africa, CACMR looks forward to continuing its engagement with the Canadian government to advance shared interests. يسر الكونغرس الكندي العربي لعلاقات الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا (CACMR) أن يتقدم بالتهنئة والامنيات الصادقة إلى معالي السيد مارك كارني بمناسبة فوزه بزعامة الحزب الليبرالي وتوليه منصب رئيس وزراء كندا الرابع والعشرين خلفا للسيد جاستن ترودو. إن هذا الاختيار يأتي في مرحلة مهمة للحزب الليبرالي ولكندا عموما.
